How to Bypass Updating to PS3 Firmware 3.42

As you've probably heard, SONY has made a new firmware for their PS3 called firmware 3.42. THIS UPDATE BREAKS THE USB EXPLOIT FOR THE PS3 (for now at least). According to SONY, this update is mandatory if you want to use your PS3 online and access the PS3 store.

Well, turns out it's not mandatory after all.

Set 67.202.81.137 as your primary and secondary DNS on your PS3 you can still use your PS3 online without having to update. I had a couple friends test it on PSN and it worked - haven't heard if the Playstation Store also works but I would assume it does.

  4. By the time i get one i'm probably gonna have to go out and get a used one with an old FW. =/

Hopefully a lot of cat and mouse goes on with this where sony patches it then new exploits are found and the cycle repeats. (just like what happened with the PSP.)

  5. Im reading in IRC that they think they can get the usb exploits working again in 3.42. We'll cross our fingers and see what happends.

  7. I hope they have the sense to keep this 3.42 exploit under wraps for a while and release it several months from now, wont do any good to have 3.43 come out a week from now, instead we could have the exploit come out in the future for firmware 4.00 then get patched in 4.01. XD

  8. Really, there have been so many ports of the exploit they have to make their work open source so everyone can update the ports. To be honest, I'm pretty convinced that SONY can't truly stop the exploit without redesigning the PS3 hardware.

  9. If it turns into a cat and mouse chase then exploits will get worse just like the PSP. Like I said.....Sony takes hackers seriously.

  10. speaking of firmware updates, will Dop-Mii be updated to reflect the new Wii Shop Channel and IOSes released today? Dop-Mii is my favorite way to perform updates, so just checking. Thanks!

  12. Does this bypass (setting the DNS numbers) really work as of right now!? Will it reset any of my data?

  13. It doesn't reset any of your data. It worked at the time I posted the article but I'm not sure if it still works (it would be really easy for SONY to fix this on their end).
