Wii Shooting Gallery 2.0 Released (Final Release)

I'm pleased to announce the final release of my most popular Wii homebrew video game, Wii Shooting Gallery.

Wii Shooting Gallery was my first  project for the Nintendo Wii and unsurprisingly the first one I can truly say I've finished. When I originally arrived at the Wii homebrew "scene", I came because of the prospect of developing video-games for a true gaming console without the need to purchase an expensive SDK.

When racking my brain to some up with a game idea, I realized there weren't any good target shooters. So I slapped some ugly coder art onto a simple C++ program and had a program in which you could use a huge square to shoot red blood cells that were capable of moving in a couple of different directions.

My goodness how the game has evolved since then! The game now has an exhaustive GUI, sound, the ability to save your favorite options and your progress, and many, many more modes of play including one similiar to galaga (but with a twist of course ;-) ).

The entire development cycle for this game was about a year and half. While I doubt most people wont play this game for more then twenty minutes or so. I truly hope everyone gets a little something out of it; Be it a little bit of fun or a great lesson in programming (all of the techniques used in the source are covered in detail on this blog).

It's sad to goodbye to this project, but even though it's development cycle is over, the things I learned and friends I made while working on it will never be forgotten.

Wii Shooting Gallery Beta 1 Video

As the game is still unfinished, I realize that this is a bit of an inappropriate time to post another video of it. Thing is though, there are real-world people that are interested in viewing my work but are unable to run wii homebrew - so this video is really for them (but I certainly hope everyone else enjoys it as well!!!). As always, I apologize for the low video quality.

Looking for original free music for Wii Shooting Gallery 2.0

Those of you who survived my technical ramble on playing external MP3s yesterday may not have picked up on what all of that means: I finally have interchangeable background music support for Wii Shooting Gallery 2.0

However, I can never distribute the game if the default music is licensed (as it is currently).

So basically, I'm looking for three tracks of original, legal to distribute freely, music that would be good background music for Wii Shooting Gallery 2.0

Please post a comment if you can help me out. Thanks :-)

Update: I found the music I was looking for at Newgrounds. Thanks to everyone who responded.

Wii Shooting Gallery Build Update Video (poor quality :P)

So basically, I've done a ton of work on Wii Shooting Gallery since the 1.9 release. I'm not ready (not even close) for the next release yet, but I figured it was time to show everyone who's been waiting patiently an update rather than cryptically typing about one. So, enjoy it :)

And apologies about the poor video quality. I took this video in the early morning with a cheap digital camera. If anyone has a capture card and would be willing to make and then upload a higher quality video, please get in touch in with me.

The Upcoming Wii Shooting Gallery 2.0

For those of you that don't know yet, the next version of my popular app Wii Shooting Gallery is going to be vastly different from all of the previous version. This post will highlight the next set of changes and additional features to expect:

The Menu
...Will no longer be squished into one screen. It will be spread out over a number of screens. For example, on the "main screen" you can go to the "options screen", the "choose your game screen", or the "quit the app screen". It will also be given a bit of a visual upgrade.

Option Configurations
You can now save the options you normally set (such as which crosshair you like, which background you always choose, etc.) instead of having to reset them every time you turn the game on.

Game Over Screen
At the conclusion of a game, you will be presented with a screen that will show you your score for the match, and the highscore for that type of a match. You will also be prompted to select to play the game again, 0r to return to the menu.

Pause Screen
Pressing + during a match will now bring up a pause screen that will prompt you to resume the match or return to the menu. You can also view your score and the highscore for that type of a match. (In case you haven't figured it out, it's almost the same thing as the game over screen)

Wii Shoot In Space
Will have bosses, be more even, and no longer have multiple difficulty settings. It will also have no more random crashing.

Themes?
Still not entirely sure how I'm going to do this, or implement this (read: this is subject to change) but on the main menu you will be able to turn on a Nintendo theme that replaces all of the artwork with Nintendoish artwork or a Mii theme that replaces the targets with Miis. (Looking into libmii for doing this. Not sure how plausible it is. But I will do it if it is possible.)

Music/Sound
There will be multiple selections of background music you can choose (which reminds me, if you're reading peterdeman, I'm sending you an e-mail finally ;) ). I am looking into using asnd to enable sound effects that you can hear over the background music (like gunshots for example).

Well, that's it. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
